first solo show, in Portland OR.
Russia’s Greatest Contribution to World History: 1997. A retrospective.
This body of work starts with found business reports and aviation charts found salvaged from recycling centers. The paintings are done directly on the material with spray paint and sumi ink. The results were hard to work with but exciting as the oil based spray paint wouldn’t mix with the water ink on the glossy paper. I then collaged digital photos to create the final compositions which were covered by a thick glossy acrylic epoxy.
I used found technical diagrams and imagery directly into my art and it was the first time using spray paint- much to to the dislike of my roommate at the time. Just out of college, I’d stayed up all nights painting this show with one month lead time and in the process got fired from my job, which I believe was the official start of my art carrier. Which is probably why I titled it “A retrospective”.
