single edition silkscreen paintings
Lower East Side 2009
The Lower East Side Printshop was founded in 1968 and has become a premier not-for-profit printmaking studio in New York City.
Newly moved to NYC, I received a year long residency award from the Lower East Side Printshop. Actually located near Times Square in the Garment District instead of Lower East, this printmaking studio is an institution of print in NYC.
Working on paper with silkscreen and paint, I created over 500 pieces throughout the year exploring the media, colors and in the moment “silkscreen painting”. Printmaking is often a traditionally controlled medium of editions. I committed myself to working in a free form, painting in the moment process which produced some amazing, non-tradiontal results.
Many of the images come from photos I’d taken around the city. There are forms and pieces of NYC through snapshots of architecture and basic shapes.
I like how these are playful because they mashup textures, shapes, buildings throughout the city and recompose a colorful alternative.
