Artwork for hotel in coastal town, Astoria OR
Commodore Hotel
The Commodore is a 19 room boutique hotel in Astoria, Oregon. It was originally built in the 1920’s and renovated by Osmose Design in the early part of 2009. Tasked with keeping within Astoria’s history of a coastal fishing town but giving an updated style. This series is created with collaborative art partner Justin Gorman.
The photos are of hand-cast fishing nets suspended in air, shot from below. The weightless patterns and shapes provide the foundations for the pieces. We arranged our compositions by overlapping images of the nets, adding large color fields, and including the subtle use of graphics to embellish the transparent forms of the net.
When completed, we printed each composition on canvas material at 84 x 59 inches. The prints were installed in the rooms by adhering them (like wallpaper) above the head board, leaving half the print displayed on the wall and other half on the ceiling over the bed. We found this method of displaying the prints a great way to experience the artwork both standing up and laying down.
